SUPERKID MURRAY V SUPERMAC
By Charlie Wyett.
Teenage tennis ace Andrew Murray has been handed
a dream clash against legend John McEnroe on Sunday. The first
Brit to win the Junior US Open title takes on Supermac at the
Superset Tennis tournament in London.
The winner of the one-day, single-set competition
at Wembley Arena will bag £250,000, with Greg Rusedski,
Goran Ivanisevic and Boris Becker also competing. Scotsman Murray,
17, who has £7,317 in winnings compared to McEnroe's £7.3m,
has been drafted in as a replacement for Tim Henman, who has withdrawn
with back and shoulder injuries.
But Murray, part of the Davis Cup squad following
his triumph in New York earlier this month, said: "I'm really
pumped to play an event like this and to have a chance to play
with some of the greatest players ever."
"I'm so excited to play McEnroe. He's a
real legend, somebody I looked up to when I was younger."
Three time Wimbledon winner McEnroe, 45, has warned Murray he
is in for a tough time, especially as the match will last only
one set - with the winner through to the semi-finals. He said:
"I can give anyone on the men's tour a run for his money
for a set or two and it'll be interesting to see how I perform
against Andrew. I'm not in condition to play the best of five
but, if I get lucky, then the set could be over in a heartbeat."
"I have a tough enough time on the seniors
tour with Boris and now Jim Courier and Richard Krajicek to deal
with and so trying to take on the current guys is not something
I'd aim to do - except in this format."
McEnroe is looking forward to playing against
clay-court specialist Murray, who is tipped for big things. The
American added: "I have heard about Andrew for a couple of
years and got to see him play in the last couple of months. He
has a lot of talent. Now I have the chance to see what he's got
at first hand."
The winner will play either Robby Ginepri or
Croatian Mario Ancic in the semi-finals. In the other matches,
British No 2 Rusedski faces Becker, with the winner playing either
former Wimbledon favourite Ivanisevic or Tommy Robredo.

GOR OUT TO SHUT MAC UP
By Charlie Wyett.
GORAN IVANISEVIC is determined to do the impossible
- and silence the biggest gob in the history of tennis. The Croat
comes out of retirement tomorrow for Superset Tennis, and is dreaming
of beating John McEnroe in the final at Wembley Areana. Former
Wimbledon winners Ivanisevic, McEnroe, 45, and Boris Becker, along
with Brit Greg Rusedski and Andrew Murray, will star in the one-set
knockout competition which has a £250,000 jackpot for the
winner.
Ivanisevic, 33, said: "McEnroe's got no
chance! He's a pretty cocky guy you know! I would like to play
him you know, I would like to kick his a***."
The big-sever. who quit the professional tennis
circuit at Wimbledon this year, faces Spain's Tommy Robredo in
the first round, with the winner taking on either Rusedski or
Becker in the semis. In the other half of the draw, British teenage
ace Murray takes on McEnroe, while Croat Mario Ancic is up against
American Robby Ginepri.
Crowd-favourite Ivanisevic, who beat Pat Rafter
to win the Wimbledon final three years ago, said: "I am really
looking forward to this. There will be a lot of good players in
one place and it's going to be quick, exciting one-set tennis.
It's a lot of money to win and I think the crowd will enjoy it.
It's going to be fun and serious."
Competitors will be able to question any calls
with the use of slow-motion replays and the players will wear
heart-rate monitors during their matches. Tim Henman was due to
have faced McEnroe but has withdrawn because of shoulder and back
injuries. The British No 1, currently world No 4, will be a pundit
for Sky Sports, who will be showing all the tennis live tomorrow
afternoon and evening.
Yet Henman's loss is Murray's gain. The first
Brit to win the US Open junior title said: "It has been an
amazing few weeks for me."
